About Ndere Island National Park

Ndere Island, covering approximately 4.2 square kilometers, is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The island is accessible by boat from Homa Bay, providing a serene approach to a landscape dominated by rocky hills, acacia woodlands, and sandy shores.
This Park was largely established to provide refuge for small populations of impalas. Other species found here include African fish eagles, swifts, hippopotamus, Nile crocodiles, impalas and zebras. Ndere means “meeting place” in the local Dholuo (Luo language).
The park’s isolation has allowed wildlife to thrive, making it a haven for antelopes, monitor lizards, and diverse bird species. Its calm waters and lush landscapes also make it a haven for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
